Welcome to Room 51!

Welcome to our class.  In room 51 we are a community of learners.  We are busy working each day.  Fourth grade is a very important year and we have a lot to.  Please check back often to see what we are up to.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

MAP Testing
We will be testing first thing in the morning on May 12th and May 16th.  Please make sure your student is on time to school these days.

Oregon Trail Supplies
Thank you for all the supplies, we are still in need of several items.  Please look for the flyer coming home to remind you what we are short on.  Thanks for all of your help!

CURRENT UNITS OF STUDY

READING
Students will be finishing up their Historical Fiction Novels.  They will need to complete their book report and turn it in by May 5th.  We will also begin reading The Stout-Hearted Seven in class.  This is a novel that prepares students for the Whitman Mission field trip coming up on the 22nd of May.

MATH
Students wil be working on a short number sense unit next week.  Please work with your students on their basic facts.  It's amazing how much they relied on the charts that were on their desks prior to the WASL.
CONTINUE TO WORK ON MULTIPLICATION FACTS!

SCIENCE
We are in motion!!  Students are having a blast building, sketching, and testing their vehicles.  Students are using the standard car to do tests on speed and force.  This week they modified the standard vehicle according to required elements for a "moon vehicle."  They also had to do blueprints on their designs.

SOCIAL STUDIES
We are traveling the trail!  Students are organized into wagon groups (families), with each student taking on a pioneer identity.  They have really gotten into this unit with full force.  Each day the families draw travel cards to record their mileage on the Oregon Trail.  This is tracked on a huge map in the hallway.  They also draw a disaster card and then have to deal with the consequences.  We have had several sick pioneers!  We will continue this unit throughout the remainder of the year!  Ask your student about their travels, their journals have been a hoot to read!

Some of the current activities and projects include a quilt, a wagon, and gravestones.  Most wagons have made it to the half-way point.
